Classroom Pet Statement of Understanding
In accordance with Santa Rosa County School Board Policy, this letter is to inform you that there are resident pets in our classroom. We have two guinea pigs named Milk and Cookies that live in our classroom during the school year. Throughout the year we will make observations about them and learn to take care of them.
Important information:
They are seen annually by a veterinarian, or more often if necessary. Their bedding consists of all natural materials including timothy hay and cedar wood. They remain in their habitat during the day and are socialized weekly with the students getting to pet them and feed them. Their habitat is cleaned weekly by the teacher. Guinea pigs are known to nibble on items stuck in their cage including pencils, erasers and even fingers. Though their nibbles do not normally break skin, I encourage students to not put anything in the cage including fingers to prevent any possible injuries to the students or the guinea pigs.
If your child has an allergy to pet dander, or any of the bedding products please let me know immediately so that Milk and Cookies can be removed from the classroom. While pets can be very beneficial in the learning process your child’s well-being is my priority.
